Unique experiences in the Great Lakes
Tanja Maehle, Trade Marketing Manager International
My cruise in the Great Lakes of North America was more than just a cruise – it was an inspiring voyage of discovery through the nature, history, and culture of the largest freshwater system in terms of area. The HANSEATIC inspiration provided the perfect setting for an exclusive experience.
My journey began in Milwaukee – affectionately known as “Brew City” and a paradise for beer enthusiasts. We had the opportunity to explore the city by bicycle with a local guide and ended the tour with a small beer tasting at a local brewery.
My absolute highlight was Mackinac Island – a true gem in Lake Huron. Spending a day here feels like stepping back in time. Cars have been banned on Mackinac Island for over 125 years! Instead, people get around by bicycle, horse-drawn carriage or on foot.
We travelled by carriage past the Grand Hotel, which boasts the longest porch in the world – over 200 metres (660 feet).
Mackinac Island is also famous for its fudge production. During peak season, over 10 tonnes of sugar are processed each week – all delivered by ferry and horse-drawn carriage.
Another goosebump moment came in the evening during the night-time passage through the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie (Michigan). Between Lake Huron and Lake Superior, the HANSEATIC inspiration passed through the largest lock system in the world, overcoming a height difference of six and a half metres (21 feet). It was impressive to watch the captain steer the ship into the narrow lock.
On deck, we could witness the spectacle live while the crew treated us to an “Officers Mix Cocktail” accompanied by music.
Manistique, a charming town on the northern shore of Lake Michigan, also left a lasting impression with its largest spring: Kitch-iti-kipi. Over 10,000 gallons of water per minute gush from limestone fissures, and the water is crystal-clear and emerald green. Thanks to excellent lectures on board about the regions and their histories, we were well prepared for each excursion.
My favourite spot on board was the Observation Lounge with its stunning panoramic views, and in the evening, a pianist created a stylish atmosphere.
